Khao Yai is one of the easiest escapes from Bangkok. It’s close enough for a weekend, but far enough to feel like another world. Here are the main ways to make the journey, with the trade-offs of each.
Option 1: Private car or driver (most popular)
The drive from central Bangkok to Pak Chong takes around three hours, depending on traffic. The usual route heads north on Highway 1 and then north-east on Highway 2 (Mittraphap Road), turning off at Pak Chong. From there, Thanarat Road (Route 2090) climbs towards the national park’s northern gate.
- Pros: door-to-door, flexible, and you’ll have a car for getting around Khao Yai, which you’ll need.
- Cons: Friday-evening and Sunday-afternoon traffic can add significant time.
- Tip: leave Bangkok before 08:00 on a Saturday, or travel midweek.
Many resorts can arrange private transfers from Bangkok or the airports. Ask when you book.
Option 2: Train to Pak Chong
Long-distance trains on the north-eastern line run from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal to Pak Chong. One ordinary service still leaves from Hua Lamphong. Journey times range from about 2 hours 40 minutes on the fastest special express to nearly 4 hours on slower rapid trains. Classes vary by train, from air-conditioned second class with reclining seats to fan-cooled third class.
- Pros: relaxing and scenic, with no traffic.
- Cons: you’ll still need a pickup or taxi from Pak Chong station, and a car to get around.
Check current timetables with the State Railway of Thailand, or see a train guide such as Thai Train Guide.
Option 3: Bus or minivan
Buses and minivans on the Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima route stop in Pak Chong. They’re the cheapest option, but the least comfortable with luggage, and you’ll need onward transport.
Option 4: Self-drive
Thailand drives on the left. Check that your licence and insurance are valid for Thailand. An International Driving Permit is commonly required alongside your home licence. Inside the national park, the speed limit is 60 km/h, elephants have right of way, and there are no petrol stations.
